Philip “Phil” Sain, self-proclaimed Ambassador of the YOUNG WORLD, is a speaker and HIV activist. As a licensed social worker, Philip assists people with HIV and those who are vulnerable to HIV acquisition and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to improve their mental and sexual health through education, advocacy, and treatment.
For years, Philip battled depression and alcoholism and masked feelings of anger, emptiness, and resentment. In 2013, he was diagnosed with HIV on World AIDS Day during a testing event at his church. Three years later, he was diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder with psychotic features and PTSD.
After working in entertainment marketing and public relations for more than ten years, Philip changed careers and believes he is now walking toward his purpose: social work. He is currently the medical case manager and Ron Simmons Wellness Program Manager at Washington Health Institute, where he provides referrals and navigation support for medical and non-medical resources; treatment adherence counseling; crisis intervention; individual psychotherapy; and coordinates wellness groups for persons with HIV and individuals at risk of HIV acquisition who are on PrEP. He also serves as the program manager for SLK Health Services Corporation (SLK) where he designs
programs to support the organization’s goals; educate the community on SLK services; develops curriculums; and draft grant applications and proposals to fund programming. In addition, Phil is a psychotherapist at For Us Therapeutics Counseling and Consulting Services.
In the community, Philip is the vice president of the HIV/AIDS Ministry at Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, and an appointed commissioner on the Washington, DC, Regional Planning Commission on Health and HIV. He is also an HIV advocate for Gilead Sciences, Inc.; a research-based biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of innovative medicines. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and a member of the Washington, DC, chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association. A heartfelt champion of black excellence and member of the 2022 class of Hampton University’s Forty Under 40 Alumni Society.
Philip earned a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from The Catholic University of America; a Master of Business Administration from Webster University; and a Bachelor of Science in sport management from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.
